IBAC says former Labor minister Theo Theophanous ‘improperly’ lobbied for developer

A former Victorian Labor minister “improperly” lobbied for a major development consortium and obtained donations for his daughter’s election campaign, the state’s anti-corruption watchdog has found.
For two years, the Independent Broad-based Anti-Corruption Commission (IBAC) investigated Theo Theophanous, who was a minister in the Brumby and Bracks Labor governments before becoming a lobbyist.

His daughter Kat Theophanous is the Labor MP for Northcote and IBAC found that her campaign benefited from donations from her father’s unregistered client.

Operation Clara probed Mr Theophanous’s dealings with the Chinese-backed Australian Education City (AEC), a $31 billion proposal to build an education and employment hub in East Werribee.

Work to bring Flowerdale blaze under control continues as heatwave conditions challenge firefighters

Fire crews are continuing to battle a grassfire that has razed more than 900 hectares of land at Flowerdale, north of Melbourne.
The blaze started on Tuesday and is yet to be contained, although fire authorities are confident that will be achieved today.

One home, cars and livestock have been destroyed by the fire.

Forecast high temperatures and wind gusts today and tomorrow are expected to make the task of bringing the blaze under control difficult for firefighters already dealing with tricky terrain.

A Watch and Act alert remains in place for Flowerdale, Dairy Creek, Homewood, Kerrisdale and Strath Creek.

AGL, Australia’s largest provider, reveals its coal-fired power generator outages will continue

There is no relief in sight from Australia’s energy crisis with the nation’s largest energy producer revealing several of its a coal-fired power units will be out of production for some time.
AGL Energy Limited today confirmed its Loy Yang A unit 2 in Victoria’s Latrobe Valley, which went offline in April, will not be fixed until “the second half of September”.

The company blamed “global supply chain issues and the availability of specialised materials” for the outage extension.

The AGL statement said initially the unit broke down following an electrical fault in the generator, but now the generator rotor has failed extending the repair time by at least two months.

Victorian vegetable farm M&G Vizzarri fined $60k for using illegal workers

Australia’s largest grower of asparagus and broccolini has been fined $60,000 for its role in engaging illegal workers.
M&G Vizzarri Proprietary Limited, headed by Giuseppe Vizzarri, was convicted of breaching the Migration Act after pleading guilty to eight charges of allowing an unlawful non-citizen to work.

It faced one further charge of allowing a lawful non-citizen to work in breach of a work-related condition.

In December 2016, Australian Border Force and Australian Federal Police officers found nine illegal workers at the Koo Wee Rup property, east of Melbourne.

Geelong’s Commonwealth Games involvement under threat as feud with Victorian government intensifies

The City of Greater Geelong’s chief executive says he is “bitterly disappointed” after Premier Daniel Andrews and several government MPs publicly accused the council of mismanaging crucial community projects.
Local Labor MPs Lisa Neville (Bellarine), Christine Couzens (Geelong), John Eren (Lara) and Darren Cheeseman (South Barwon) penned a letter to the council, which was then published by the local newspaper shortly afterwards.

That letter detailed eight government-funded projects that the MPs claimed were “delayed, de-prioritised or mismanaged” by the City of Greater Geelong Council.

Premier Daniel Andrews backed the letter and has threatened to oust Geelong council from any involvement in the 2026 Commonwealth Games if the projects listed in the letter were not prioritised.
